Endodontic imaging mode for Planmeca ProMax® 3D family

Planmeca now offers a new imaging mode that is specially designed for endodontic studies. The new imaging mode is available for all new Planmeca ProMax® 3D family units and provides perfect visualization of even the finest anatomical details.

With Planmeca AINO™ noise removal and Planmeca ARA™ artifact removal algorithms, the result is noise-free and crystal-clear images. This new imaging mode is ideal for endodontics and other cases with small anatomical details, such as ears.

Planmeca AINO™ Adaptive Image Noise Optimiser

  • An intelligent noise filter that reduces noise in CBCT images while preserving valuable details
  • Analyses exposure data during reconstruction and adaptively differentiates noise and fine details
  • Planmeca AINO™ is enabled from Planmeca Romexis® 3D image capturing dialog according to the patient case and diagnostic need. The original image is stored in the reconstruction PC (100 exposure buffer) and can be recalled in Planmeca Romexis.
  • Improves image quality in the endodontic imaging mode where noise is inherent due to extremely small voxel size. It is also especially useful when using the Planmeca Ultra Low Dose™ protocol, where noise is induced by the particularly low dose.
  • Planmeca AINO allows reducing exposure values also in all other imaging modes by reducing noise.

NB. Planmeca AINO filtering is performed on reconstruction PC GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), which is only available in Dell T3600 reconstruction PC.

Planmeca ARA™ Artefact Removal Algorithm

Metal restorations and root fillings in the patient’s mouth can cause shadows and streaks in CBCT images. The intelligent Planmeca ARA™ system removes these artefacts efficiently from Planmeca ProMax® 3D images.

  • Removes streaks and artifacts efficiently
  • Based on a heuristic model
  • The result of extensive scientific research and a vast amount of clinical patient data
  • Artefact removal is enabled from Planmeca Romexis® 3D image capturing dialog according to the patient case (choose from low, medium or high). It can be performed multiple times at different levels using original exposure data.

To avoid these artefacts from occurring, we suggest the following:

Make sure to use the Planmeca ARA™ artefact removal algorithms when imaging patients with a noticeable amount of previous dental work. The Planmeca ARA algorithm can be activated before image acquisition, but artefact removal can also be done manually after exposure. The most important aspect of metal artefact removal is to remove only the unwanted artefacts – without weakening the diagnostic value of the scan by altering the image too much.

The Planmeca ProMax® 3D head support was designed to provide the best balance between head stabilisation and patient comfort. It is also recommended that patients sit in a chair with locked wheels, which has been provided with the unit. Patients can also be advised to keep their eyes closed during the scan.

The longer the scan time, the more time the patient has to move during the scan. Therefore it might be favorable to use the Planmeca Ultra Low Dose™ imaging protocol that allows a faster scan time in addition to a lower effective patient dose.
