Planmeca supports the most efficient workflows available in the field of prosthetic dentistry. From scanning to design and milling, all steps are conveniently controlled in the same software system – enabling unmatched ease throughout the treatment.
The patient needed two molar fillings to be replaced due to cusp fractures. Both of the molars had several existing fillings. The treatment started with a preparation visit during which the existing fillings were removed and a digital impression was captured with the Planmeca Emerald® S scanner. An Isolite® suction device was used to keep the cheek retracted and wedges were also used for soft tissue retraction. Temporary fillings were not needed.
The assistant planned the treatment using the Planmeca PlanCAD® Easy software. The assistant defined the cusp alignments, checked the occlusal and approximal contacts and verified the thickness of the material. Once the final plan was approved by the dentist, the job was sent to the Planmeca PlanMill® 40 S milling unit to be manufactured.
The restorations were milled at the clinic with the Planmeca PlanMill 40 S unit (8 minutes each) from IPS e.max CAD. Afterwards, they were characterised and glazed, and finally crystallised. This step was carried out by the dental assistant.
Once the restorations had been milled, stained and glazed, they were fitted and cemented. This step was completed by the dentist and assistant. The fit was excellent and adjustments were not needed. During this step, the wedges were again used to ease the removal of excess cement.
To ensure that the quality of the treatment was as intended, the final results were confirmed with an intraoral X-ray image. Planmeca ProX™ intraoral X-ray unit, combined with the Planmeca ProSensor® HD intraoral sensor or Planmeca ProScanner® 2.0 imaging plate scanner, can be used for the post-operative check-ups. Overall, this treatment required around 2 hours of the dentist’s time. When multiple restorations are designed and manufactured during the same visit, it makes costs efficient both for the patient and dentist.
The Planmeca Emerald® S intraoral scanner and Planmeca PlanMill® 40 S milling unit help us offer high-quality dentistry to patients at our clinic in Turku, Finland. The most common restoration we do is a same-day crown. When we design and manufacture two or three restorations in one visit, the cost of the treatment is efficient for us and the patient alike.
