AI tools for intraoral imaging now available in Planmeca Romexis® 7 software

Planmeca Romexis® 7 dental imaging software now extends its built-in AI-powered features to intraoral imaging, making everyday workflows faster and more efficient. The software automatically detects and numbers teeth in intraoral X-ray images, adjusts their orientation when needed, and organises them into study templates – reducing manual work and saving valuable time. These AI features are included in the Romexis 7 licence for all users as standard.

AI tools for intraoral imaging now available in Planmeca Romexis® 7 software

Press release Jan 20, 2026

First introduced in summer 2025, Planmeca Romexis® 7 comes with built-in AI features as standard. The latest update (release 6.5.2) expands these capabilities from CBCT imaging to 2D intraoral imaging, further enhancing dental workflows.

Romexis now automatically identifies individual teeth in intraoral X-ray images and assigns the tooth number. This eliminates manual work and saves significant time, as users only need to verify the numbering and make adjustments, if needed. The feature further streamlines intraoral imaging workflows when using the Planmeca ProX™ intraoral imaging device with Planmeca ProSensor® HD dental sensor, as the images are displayed in Romexis with tooth numbers immediately after image capture.

Automatic tooth numbering improves documentation efficiency at dental clinics by enabling reliable searching and filtering of intraoral images by tooth and ensuring accurate and consistent documentation. Thanks to automatic tooth numbering, Romexis also automatically rotates intraoral images into correct orientation – regardless of how the sensor was positioned during image capture.

These AI tools also allow Romexis to place intraoral images into the correct slots in study templates immediately after image capture or import. This means users can scan or capture images in any order and Romexis automatically rotates and organises the images into the correct template slots. The same also applies to PSP scanning: the phosphor plates can be scanned in any order, and Romexis takes care of the rest.

“A single bitewing image can show 8–9 teeth, meaning users would normally need make multiple clicks to mark each tooth manually. With multiple images, this effort quickly multiplies. The AI-powered tooth numbering of Romexis 7 eliminates this manual work by automatically identifying and assigning the correct number to each tooth, saving significant time,” tells Helianna Puhlin-Nurminen, Vice President for Digital Imaging and Applications at Planmeca.

“Of course, this feature does not replace professional judgment, meaning that dental professionals must always review and confirm all AI-generated assignments before using them for diagnosis, treatment planning, or documentation.”

The 6.5.2 software release also includes new tools for 3D imaging, workflow wizard and AI tools for the Romexis® CMF Surgery module, and AI-powered measurement tools for dental analyses in the Romexis® CAD/CAM module.
