Planmeca Romexis® 7 is a ground-breaking new Romexis version that includes built-in AI-powered features as standard.
The integrated AI of the software acts as a smart assistant,
automatically handling time-consuming tasks while unlocking new possibilities in dental treatment planning.
It enables fewer clicks, simpler software, less routine work, and less time spent on the computer
– saving more time for what truly matters: patient care.
The AI-powered features in Romexis 7 have been developed entirely in house by Planmeca’s software development team. This allows us to focus on features that truly matter to Romexis users and to respond quickly to user feedback and evolving clinical needs.
The AI-powered features in Romexis 7 are fully compatible with both Windows and macOS.
The processing of all patient data using the new, integrated AI features of Romexis 7 takes place locally on the user’s workstation – no information is transmitted to cloud services. The only exception is the AI-powered smart chat, which uses cloud services to provide user instructions and requires an internet connection.
Romexis 7 introduces a language model-based smart chat that guides users in operating the software. The virtual assistant provides concise answers to day-to-day software operations using the Romexis manuals and tutorial videos as its source content.
Users only need to ask a question, and the virtual assistant provides answers with step-by-step instructions and links to suitable tutorial videos.
Tip! The smart chat is powered by a language model and designed to respond in a humanlike manner. When a user asks a broad question, it provides a general overview of the topic. When the question is more specific, including module and other details, the chat delivers a pinpoint answer. It also remembers previous prompts, so if the first response is not exactly what you wanted, add more details and the follow-up replies will become more accurate and helpful.
Please note that the smart chat feature requires an internet connection.
Romexis 7 introduces three new AI-powered 3D imaging tools that become visible in the upper toolbar once the new software licence is activated. Smart Anatomy and Smart Fit are both always included with the 3D Standard licence and available to all users of the 3D imaging module. If the user also holds a 3D Implant licence, the Smart Implant feature will additionally appear in the toolbar.
Automatic segmentations
The brand-new Smart Anatomy tool automatically detects and segments the following anatomies:
• Permanent teeth
• Mandibular nerves
• Mandible and maxilla
• Airways
• Sinuses
• Cephalometric landmarks
The feature can be set to run automatically after an image capture through the Admin module: Local settings > 3D imaging > Run Smart Anatomy automatically after image capture.
Segmenting the anatomies with Smart Anatomy is very fast. The actual speed depends on the workstation, operating system*, volume size, resolution and patient case – see the following example timings.
*macOS uses CPU for segmentations, which is why they take longer to process.
Automatic tooth number recognition
Smart Anatomy also enables automatic tooth number recognition, allowing for an intuitive and easy way to navigate the CBCT data simply by clicking on the tooth number in the tooth chart.
Romexis 7 also introduces a new feature to view single tooth in a 3D rendering view: Romexis segments the tooth and removes all surrounding structures. This opens up new and interesting possibilities for examining the teeth individually, particularly in endodontic cases when combined with the Endo rendering mode.
Rendering crop
Once the Smart Anatomy segmentation has been completed, it is possible to use the Rendering Crop tool to crop rendered 3D images based on the segmented bones. This allows the creation of completely noise- and artefact-free 3D visualisations of the renderings.
The feature will be enabled only after completing the segmentation with Smart Anatomy.
Automatic fitting of CBCTs and intraoral scans
Planmeca Romexis 7 allows CBCT images and intraoral scans to be automatically fitted together through a new Smart Fit tool. If the CBCT image has not yet been segmented, the fitting will automatically run the segmentation before fitting the scan with the volume.
The feature supports full arch intraoral scans in both STL and PLY file formats.
Automated implant plan proposals
Romexis 7 revolutionises implant planning with automated, intelligent workflow that delivers implant plan proposals with minimal user input.
The user simply needs to click on the Smart Implant button, specify the implant product line, and Romexis takes care of the rest: it automatically identifies missing teeth, scales virtual crowns to fit the sites, selects the right size for the implants, and places them accordingly. The user is only required to check the clinical correctness of the proposal and make adjustments, if needed.
In generating the proposal, Romexis considers the following aspects:
• Adjacent teeth and their roots
• Mandible and maxilla bone
• Mandibular nerve
• Restoration
The implant plan proposal is then served up ready for final review, which the user can freely adjust, if needed. The chosen product line is saved as a favourite for future cases.
Thanks to AI, implant guide design in Romexis is now even easier and faster.
Once the CBCT image and intraoral scan have been fitted together using Smart Fit, Romexis automatically recognises and defines the suitable area for a surgical guide and draws the guide area, which can be further adjusted by the user, if needed.
Romexis can also extract the tooth automatically – the user simply needs to click on the desired tooth in the intraoral scan.
Also, some text buttons have been changed to icons for increased usability.
The Smart Anatomy feature also identifies several landmarks from the segmented anatomies, which enable creating ready-made views, such as an automatic TMJ view. As a result, users no longer need to point out the condyles as Romexis is now able to calculate optimal data range and arrange views for TMJ analysis using different anatomical landmarks.
Enhanced anatomic rendering
Enhanced rendering is available for segmented anatomies. The transparency of the rendering can be adjusted for better visibility into the area of interest.
Changes to the object browser
The Object Browser now has a maximise button that allows it to be expanded to full height.
Each category in the Object Browser now includes an icon to improve the visual distinction of each category. These subgroups can also be expanded or collapsed for better visualisation using a new collapse function.
Improvements in 3D rendering view
In Romexis 7, the Show/Hide Plane icons have been moved to the upper part of the 3D rendered view. In addition, a Show from top button has
been added.
The settings for 3D rendering views have been moved to the right tool bar.
Improvements in user interface
Add text and Add text with arrow buttons as well as Draw rectangle and Draw ellipse buttons have been combined into one button with a drop down menu.
Some unused buttons have been removed:
- Show/Hide 3D rendering button has been removed from the Adjust tools
- Show Cube button has been removed from the 3D rendering tools
- Autofocus panoramic button has been removed
Additionally, 3D rendered panoramic button has been moved to Pan view settings.
New options for default settings
It is now possible to define default diameter for nerve tools.
Move/Rotate Volume tool can be set on or off as default.
Zoom with Scroll Wheel tool can be set on or off as default.
Automatic AI landmark detection
Romexis 7 also offers new tools for virtual orthognathic surgery planning, expanding the existing capabilities of Romexis® Smart. While Romexis Smart remains the recommended solution for segmentations due to its maturity in complex maxillofacial cases, the standard Smart Anatomy tool in Romexis 7 enhances treatment planning by automatically recognising and detecting anatomical landmarks.
Automatic report of the planned surgery
The module now includes a feature to create a comprehensive pdf report of the planned surgery.
Other changes
• Occlusion contacts
• Improved preview images for osteotomy templates
• Performance improvements
• Rendering down-sampling disabled by default
User interface changes
• Removed segment voxel presentation overlay in slice views
• Removed segment voxel presentation transparency slider
• Removed threshold slider
Thanks to the automatic landmark detection of Smart Anatomy feature, Romexis is now able to generate automatic 3D cephalometric analyses, eliminating the need for users to mark anatomical points manually. Users only need to verify the clinical accuracy of detected landmarks and analysis suggestions, and have full freedom to adjust these manually, if needed.
Romexis 7 introduces improved visualisations of the intraoral scans in the Romexis® Ortho Simulator software.
The new software release also includes a new feature to create models of the simulated results for 3D printing. The simulated model can be exported as STL and PLY format, including both the surface model and the model with a base.
