Planmeca PlanCAD Easy 6.0 (Romexis 5.1.1 SP1)

New software release:
Planmeca PlanCAD® Easy 6.0

The new version 6.0 of Planmeca PlanCAD® Easy has elevated the software to an entirely new level. We have introduced numerous great new features based on customer feedback. The motion control system for scanners has made the entire scanning process smoother and more hygienic, while automatically superimposed HD images make margin lines clearer to see than ever before, and the awaited mirror function allows mirroring contralateral teeth when designing restorations.
Read on to find out about all the new features and improvements!

Scanning distance indicator

The scanning distance indicator is now represented by a box on the building model. The box outlines the current focus area – its colour changes based on how close or far the scanner is from the surface that is being scanned. The colour range goes from green (close) to orange and red (far).

Scan swap

If you accidentally scan a model after selecting a wrong scan type, the model can be changed to the correct type afterwards.

• Right-click and hold the mouse cursor on top of the scan type icon – up and down arrows will replace the standard cursor image.

• Drag the cursor to the desired scan type and release the mouse button.

• A message asking if would you like to swap the scan mode data will appear – click OK to reset the alignment and complete the swap. The message will vary depending on which scan models are being swapped.

Button and motion controls

New functionalities have been added to the buttons of our intraoral scanners.

  • Planmeca Emerald™
Press and hold the top and bottom button simultaneously
  • Planmeca PlanScan®
Press and hold the top button
  • When a menu appears, point the scanner towards the screen and rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise to highlight the desired action and then release the button(s). The options are:
    • Delete the model
    • Generate a model
    • Turn ICE view on/off
    • Turn data density on/off

When you see the following icons on pop-up screens, you can use the top or bottom button to choose the option instead of clicking with the mouse

Contralateral tooth copy

You can either copy existing contralateral dentition or a previously designed restoration to the prep design.

Copy contralateral dentition

  1. Use the Scan Pre-op scan type to capture the prep scan and the desired contralateral dentition.
(NB: Use the scan swap feature if you accidentally skip this step.)
  2. Use the Time Saver function to copy the pre-op model as the prep model.
  3. Perform the opposing and buccal scans with the normal procedure.
  4. Set the orientation and mark the margin.
  5. Click Pre-op Editing and mark the anatomy of the contralateral dentition that you want to copy.
  6. Click the Contralateral checkbox.
  7. Proceed to the Plan tab and adjust the position of the contralateral shell to match the placement and alignment of the preparation.
  8. Proceed to the Design tab. The contralateral pre-op anatomy is mirrored and acts like a normal pre-op case.

Copy a restoration design

  1. Follow the normal scan, orientation, and margin draw workflow for both preparations.
  2. Fully plan and design the first restoration proposal.
  3. Click the second tooth tab.
  4. On the Tooth libraries screen, click the Contralateral button to copy the other design. (This only appears after the first tooth has been designed.)
  5. Proceed with the normal design workflow.

Note: Any changes made to the second tooth on the Plan tab are ignored when a design is copied. The position of the contralateral design is based on the orientation of both preparations. Make sure that the orientations for both tooth numbers are good.

Scan Body workflow

The Scan Body scan type is for export cases only.

  1. After removing the healing cap, scan the soft tissue (where implant is placed) in the same way as the preparation model.
  2. Scan the opposing and buccal bite.
  3. Insert the scan body and scan it under the Scan Body scan type.
  4. Verify the alignment.
  5. Follow the normal procedure for exporting the case to your preferred laboratory. See your scanner’s user manual for more information.

Scan Settings

Click the Scan Settings icon to view or change your settings. Most users prefer to use the default settings.

HD Snapshot

Hover over an area to take a high definition snapshot (this replaces hitting the TAB key from previous software versions). Hover until you hear the shutter sound – it indicates that the picture has been taken.

  • The Sensitivity slider adjusts how sensitive this function is to movement of the camera
  • The Interval slider adjusts how long you have to stay still to take a snapshot
  • Selecting Apply to ICE adds the HD picture onto the ICE view of the model

Delete Low Density Areas

Use this feature when your laboratory has requested for low data to be removed. The Delete Low Density Areas setting allows the user to adjust the automatic fill of low density data within the generated model. Use the slider to increase or decrease the level of data that is shown on the model.

Delete low

Active Delete

Activate this feature and scan the data that needs to be removed. Use the slider in your Scan Settings to adjust how far away from the model the system will remove extraneous data.

Planmeca PlanScan® DASH

The DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Scanning Host) feature for Planmeca PlanScan® is active by default. It speeds up the scanning rate automatically.

Please perform the following steps, if you want to turn DASH on or off:

  1. Save the made change
  2. Disconnect the scanner
  3. Restart the software
  4. Reconnect the scanner

Model Sharpness

If you have a sharp-edged margin, you may want to increase the sharpness of the model. By default, the Model Sharpness slider is set to zero. This results in a smoother looking model and prep. If you have a sharp-edged margin that is difficult to see, try rescanning it with model sharpness increased.
Note: Low data areas will be rougher on sharper models, so please ensure there is good data density.

Support for the new upcoming slim line tip

We will make a new smaller scanning tip for Planmeca Emerald™ available in the near future. The new version 6.0 of the Planmeca PlanCAD® Easy software already supports the new slim line tip.

More information about the new tip will be released soon.

Troubleshooting/FAQ

  • On the Mill tab, multiblocks appear to be embedded in the block. This is only a visual issue – the simulation and actual milling are correct.
  • Increased model sharpness may cause scanning to be slower. If this happens, try lowering the setting. You can also try scanning the majority of the information in a low setting and then erasing and capturing the problem area with a higher sharpness setting. Higher settings use extra filtering.
  • HD Snapshot may accidentally be used at the same time as Active Delete (or any other time that you are hovering). If this causes an issue with colouring on the model, simply deactivate the Apply to ICE option.
